Dealing with Violence
Unfortunately, child neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, sex trafficking and other forms of violence are common experiences reported by adolescents and young adults. More than one third of the young people we see report some kind of hurtful experience, not necessarily by immediate family members.
Talking about such experiences with well trained and expert professionals can greatly help recovery. For more than four decades the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center has worked to help thousands of victims who survived abuse to thrive. In our friendly, warm, non-judgmental Center – built especially for young people – we provide survivors with:
- A warm welcome and a friendly face willing to help
- A licensed Master’s Level social worker who is easily reachable and able to help young people navigate services
- Trauma focused individual counseling and psychotherapy
- Victim support groups
- Family therapy
- Advocacy and legal help
In addition, we provide health care that addresses all the other health needs of survivors of abuse and neglect, delivered in a sensitive and holistic way, including:
- Comprehensive primary health care
- Sexual and reproductive health care including:
- Comprehensive sexuality education
- Risk reduction counseling
- Gynecological and complete reproductive health examinations
